Political Scandal in Ellsworth City Hall

Political Scandal in Ellsworth City Hall

On May 8th, 2014, the Hancock County Republicans hosted a political debate at Ellsworth City Hall for the upcoming District Attorney and Hancock County Sheriff’s office election. Republicans Matt Foster and Assistant District Attorney Paul Cavanaugh are vying to become the next District Attorney of Hancock and Washington County while Deputy Sheriff Scott Kane also battles Detective Alan Brown for the Hancock County Sheriff.

The District Attorney’s office, already having been rocked by scandal last year when Assistant District Attorney Mary Kellett was found guilty by the Maine Supreme Court for violating seven bar rules when she purposely targeted a man by the name of Vladek Filler, is now being accused of tampering with the current election by allowing both Assistant District Attorney Paul Cavanaugh and Detective Alan Brown to have advanced notice of the debate questions.

According to eyewitnesses, both Cavanaugh and Brown had prepared note cards specifically geared around the exact same questions that were presented to all four candidates. Both Matt Foster and Scott Kane were visibly upset by what appeared to be an unfair advantage their rivals over them had since neither Foster or Scott had been given advanced notice of the questions.

Ellsworth American reporter, Steve Fuller, was allegedly in attendance and raised questions on their actions but no story has yet to be published. Also mentioned by one of the eyewitnesses, at some point, Andrea Dunn, the district attorney’s office file clerk and part time court stenographer approached Paul Cavanaugh to take his note cards from him before anyone could verify if his prepared answers implicated him in the scandal.

Speculation that Detective Steven McFarland, who is also the Sedgwick Republican Committee Chairman provided both Cavanaugh and Brown advanced notice of the questions, have been floating around. It is also rumored that McFarland may have written a couple of the questions since he is one of the Republican chairmen.

If the allegations are true, and the current District Attorney’s Office has been rigging the election in favor of maintaining the status quo, it begs the question, “What have they done for Democrat Candidate, Bill Entwisle?”
